Scott Brown
January 13, 1959 – April 2, 2005
Scott Brown was one of those lucky people who actually loved what he did for
a living. Scott was born into a farming family and cultivated his natural talent
to help his family expand Brown’s Orchards and Farm Market into the thriving business
it is today.
Scott worked as the Brown’s Vice President and manager of the fruit and vegetable
operation. His grandparents started Brown’s Orchards with just 35 acres in 1948;
however, the family worked diligently to grow the business and now owns and operates
150 acres of fruit and vegetable crops.
Scott inherited his sincere love for farming and his strong work ethic from his
parents, Stan and Nona Brown. He believed in “doing things the most up to date
way” and had a true passion for growing the best fruit possible. In the last
few days of his life, his wife Brenda asked him what his favorite pastime was
and he enthusiastically responded, “Growing apples!”. For Scott it wasn’t the
mere task of planting and harvesting fruit that made his chosen occupation so
intriguing but the study of how to foster the growth of a fruit tree to its maximum
potential and to truly appreciate the fruit of his labor.
In addition to his dedication to family and farming, Scott was also a dedicated
member of the Loganville Volunteer Fire Company in Loganville, Pennsylvania.
He was a volunteer firefighter for 28 years and served as chief in Loganville
for eight years and president of the fire company for five additional years.
He answered more fire calls than anyone else at the Loganville station and worked
to achieve a greater sense of cooperation between all the local fire departments.
He was also eager to assist in training the newest volunteers and to help them
excel as he had.
Serving his community was high on Scott’s list of priorities and he took many
opportunities to give back to the area where he was born and raised. Several
additional accolades on Scott’s resume include: member and past president of
York County Fruit Growers Association; a member of the State Horticultural Association
of Pennsylvania – serving on the Apple Research, Peach Research and the Endowment
Fund committees; and member of Loganville Borough Zoning Hearing Board.
With all of the accomplishments that Scott achieved, he was most proud of the
family that he and Brenda created together. Scott and Brenda were married for
27˝ years and raised two wonderful children, Amanda (Mandy) Sue and Travis Scott.
In March 2003, they welcomed a son-in-law, Jared Lighty, into the family. According
to Brenda, “Scott was a wonderful example to them - outstanding work ethic, wonderful husband
and involved, loving father.”
Scott not only planted seeds for a living, he planted seeds of hope for the future. With the annual presentation of the Scott Brown Memorial Seeds of Hope Award, Scott Brown continues to plant seeds and to honor the community he served and
loved throughout his life.
